Way to jump the gun Nut. As always, yet another Buckeye that just can't follow directions. This does explain why you get a small fry instead of a large fry when you go to McDonald's. But of course, he is talking about the huge monkey in the room - the violations that occurred at THE ohio state university. No one can be happier than the Weasel since his dirty boy was sent packing. And lest we forget HIzzo-ner up in Spaty-ville who isn't so squeaky clean either (http://on-msn.com/eW8rsp).
Former Texas Tech coach Bobby Knight (might have coached somewhere else but not too sure about that) who for some reason feels the need to cover his upper arms with red sweaters has said that NCAA rule book for coaches is so thick and so complex, everyone is violating some rule. So the first topic to throw out there is this:
Are major collegiate sports coaches responsible for too much?
And some nice extra prodding from DJ Gallo - http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=gallo/110310_jim_tressel_motivation&sportCat=ncf
ReplyDeleteAnd way to treat one of your prominent alums....

My quick take on college coaches: Consider business executives earning 7-figure salaries. They often have armies of people under them, helping them execute whatever mission the organization has. They often have to figure out not only how to compete, but to grow their business, all while complying with local, national, and foreign rules and regulations. When they screw up, they (sometimes) get outed in the press, and if it's bad enough, they have a court date. I understand there is pressure in major college athletics, but you can't tell me that a prominent business executive at that level has too much to worry about to be effective. Bob Knight is an old fart who knows X's and O's, and probably never deserved a 7-figure salary. As the game and its complexity changed, he didn't evolve to stay on top... and look how that worked out for him.
ReplyDeleteAny wonder why he had all those meltdowns?
As for DJ Gallo... Well, if Tress hadn't written all those life-lesson books, we wouldn't be snickering at him the same way we laughed at that evangelist in Colorado who was outed for hiring gay prostitutes. Tressel put himself on a pedestal and he's falling farther because he got too high off the ground. He deserves it.
And I have no idea why Herbie ever decided to live in Columbus. Radio show or not, the sports environment there is like NY with the Yankees. Round-the-clock and in-your-face. My friends who live there get satellite radio just so they can hear something other than "buckeyesbuckeyesbuckeyesbuckeyesbuckeyesbuckeyesbuckeyesbuckeyesbuckeyesbuckeyesbuckeyesbuckeyesbuckeyesbuckeyesbuckeyesbuckeyesbuckeyesbuckeyesbuckeyesbuckeyesbuckeyesbuckeyesbuckeyesbuckeyesbuckeyesbuckeyesbuckeyesbuckeyes."
I will go on record to say that yes, there are a few people in Columbus who need to get a life, and they're screwing it up for the rest of us who just want to enjoy the game.
