Tradition? Is that really the platform Hoke is going to revive the program on? Really? I'll admit it is better than any idea RR had.
The idea of tradition in sports has always eluded my sense of sensibility. Sports are about today. Who scores, who wins, who loses. Tell me, do you watch ESPN Classic or ESPN? The "Golden Dome" doesn't mean much to a top flight recruit today who was born after Tim Brown joined the NFL. Any kid entering his senior year of high school thinks the winged helmet is a joke. What have you done for me lately?
Hoke is making a lot of right steps towards correcting the self-imposed RichRod punishment, but I have trouble understanding how having Jaime Morris talk to today's kids about 1984 is going to motivate them. Maybe Joe Morris will chime in and kids will really listen.
Discuss.
Nice shots, Greek - straight at the Weasel's head, especially since his mom lives right by Jamie. (And also nice to see the 'college' education in the spelling of Jaime)
ReplyDeleteThe Greek has got a great point as we've seen schools such as Boise State have a sustained run of excellence without their 'tradition.'
Clearly the Moderator doesn't understand that Hoke is not only appealing to the sense of tradition, but also the Latino community. It's pronounced "hi-may."
ReplyDeleteI'm on board with the Greek... top recruits don't care one bit about tradition when they're making their decision about where to go to play football. Unless your name is Zoltan Mesko (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704554104575435563293453130.html), you only want the school that gives you the best path to the NFL. Blue chip recruits don't want to talk to a gray-hair, they want to talk to a current NFL player. They don't want to hear numbers like 42 or 132, they want to hear how many players are on current NFL rosters (provided you're not in a lockout situation).
Cuba Gooding Jr. said it best, so I don't need to repeat it... but you get the idea. Tradition is for fans, not really for players, and is irrelevant to recruits.
Interesting that The Nut refers to a player who wanted an education and therefore chose to leave Ohio but more piling on the Weasel. You going to climb out of your hole or continue to cower like you have the last few Big Ten seasons?
